Proposed Firearms Ordinance Hearing
Allen L. Mims, Jr., Chairman
Johnston County Board of Commissioners
Proposed Johnston County Firearm Ordinance
As you are aware, the Johnston County Board of Commissioners was scheduled to hold a public hearing on January 3, 2011 at our 6:00pm meeting to review and discuss the adoption of a proposed firearm ordinance. I, as well as my fellow Board members, have received several communications over the last week from concerned citizens regarding the implementation of such an ordinance. In light of these concerns, the Board and I have decided to develop a workgroup, consisting of Commissioner, staff and citizen representatives, who will review the proposed firearm ordinance, address the citizen concerns and develop a revised ordinance that is mutually acceptable among us all.
Currently the workgroup will be comprised of the following members, with the possible addition of a couple more individuals:
Allen L. Mims, Jr. – Chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners
Jeffrey P. Carver – Vice Chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners
Rick J. Hester – County Manager
Steve Bizzell – Sheriff
Berry Gray – Planning Director
Citizens: Jeff Lawrence, Mike Walters, Jake McAllister, Stephen Reeves, Jonathan Parker and Todd Blackburn
Therefore, the public hearing scheduled for January 3, 2011 has been postponed until further notice. Upon receipt of a revised ordinance from the workgroup, we shall re-advertise the date and time of the public hearing.
Thank you.

Captain "Hook" Pelosi
News From the Swamp: Democrats' Tin Ear
Nancy Pelosi defeated Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) for the post of minority leader in the 112th Congress by a vote of 150-43. This couldn't be better news -- for Republicans. Pelosi, who boasts a whopping 8 percent approval rating among independent voters, has vociferously denied liability for her party's epic election losses, saying, "We didn't lose the election because of me." Just keep telling yourself that, Nancy.
Meanwhile, in their current majority position, the Democrat leadership structure includes Pelosi as speaker, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) as majority leader and Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) as majority whip. In January, when the Democrats shift to the minority, only two leadership positions will be available, making Clyburn the odd man out.
Democrat leaders decided to create a new "assistant leader" position out of thin air to avoid a protracted battle between Hoyer and Clyburn over the minority whip position. (Is it just us, or is it weirdly ironic that Clyburn, who is black, was seeking the position of "minority whip" in the party of slavery?) There's no indication as to what the duties of this new position are, and Clyburn's colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus suspect that it's merely a move to appease them. Given that Democrats depend on getting 90 percent of the black vote each election cycle, they could very well be right.

Hagan Says Kagan Will Be A Moderate!
========
November 16, 2010
Dear Friend,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the nomination of then Solicitor General Elena Kagan to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. I greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important nomination. I apologize for my delayed response.
On May 10, 2010, President Obama nominated Solicitor General Kagan to the Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings, beginning on June 28th, to closely examine Solicitor General Kagan's record and ask questions of her and a variety of witnesses. On July 20th the committee approved her nomination, and she was confirmed by the full Senate on August 5th. I voted in support of her nomination, along with a bipartisan majority of my colleagues. On August 7th, she was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
After attending Princeton University, Oxford University, and Harvard Law School, Justice Kagan worked as a clerk on both the Federal Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court under Justice Thurgood Marshall. After working in private practice, Justice Kagan began her career as a professor, teaching at the University of Chicago Law School. In 1995, she worked under President Clintion as Associate White House Counsel and then was named Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council. After her service in the White House, Justice Kagan returned to academia, becoming a professor at Harvard Law School and in 2003 she became the first women ever to be named Dean of Harvard Law School.
While I understand your concerns regarding several issues on which Justice Kagan commented during her tenure as Dean of Harvard Law School and as White House Counsel, I believe she will be a moderate and thoughtful Justice on the United States Supreme Court. She has repeatedly insisted that the military had full access to the students at Harvard Law at all times. In fact, during her tenure as Dean, the number of military recruits actually increased, not decreased. Additionally, the American Bar Association (ABA) unanimously found Justice Kagan to be "well-qualified," which is the highest rating the ABA gives to judicial nominees. Finally, she was endorsed by many prominent figures from both parties, including the eight Solicitors General that preceded her, a group comprised of members from the Reagan, Clinton, and both Bush administrations.
I want to make my position on Supreme Court nominees clear - I believe a justice's duty is to uphold the law, not make the law. In analyzing a nominee's record, I do not impose any litmus test, but I do pay particular attention to where he or she stands on privacy, civil rights and liberties granted under the Constitution.
I believe Justice Kagan will be an extremely well-qualified, mainstream justice. Given her commitment to the rule of law, along with her wide range of work in academia, the federal judiciary, and the White House, I believe she will make an excellent addition to the United States Supreme Court.
Again, thank you for contacting my office. It is truly an honor to represent North Carolina in the United States Senate, and I hope you will not hesitate to contact me in the future should you have any further questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kay R. Hagan

Hagan Needs To Go
September 24, 2010
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act. I greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important issue.
In January 2010, in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled on the case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that the First Amendment cannot limit corporate funding of political advertisements in candidate elections. This decision effectively overturned decades of campaign finance law.
In response to the court's decision, the DISCLOSE Act was introduced in the Senate on April 30, 2010, to mitigate the harmful effects of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United.
The DISCLOSE Act would implement comprehensive disclosure requirements on corporations, unions, and other organizations that spend money on federal election campaigns. By increasing the transparency of campaign spending by these groups, this bi-partisan legislation seeks to diminish unregulated corporate power over elections. Under the legislation the leaders of corporations, unions, and other organizations would be required to appear on camera for election advertisements that their groups have funded. They would also be required to list the top five donors at the end of every campaign advertisement. Additionally, the legislation would take steps to eliminate the influence of foreign corporations on American elections.
I believe that the court's decision puts the voices of ordinary Americans at risk of being drowned out by direct corporate spending on elections. North Carolina deserves open and transparent elections, and that is why I am a co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act. Unfortunately, to date the DISCLOSE Act has been blocked from even being considered in the United States Senate. I believe that this legislation would ensure that average American voters are the ones in charge during elections, not special interest money. I can assure you that I will continue to do everything within my power to protect the integrity of the elections process.
Again, thank you for contacting my office. It is truly an honor to represent North Carolina in the United States Senate, and I hope you will not hesitate to contact me in the future should you have any further questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kay R. Hagan

NC LS September Conference & Nathaniel Macon Institute (NMI)
“North Carolina Liberty Flag”
(One Week Away!!!)
“Localism: Effective Political Activism at Home”
(a facilitated panel-discussion)
11AM-3PM
Saturday, 18 September 2010,
Mayflower Seafood Restaurant, 1160 Huffman Mill Road
Burlington, North Carolina
Our September Conference theme will focus on how NC LS members can effectively involve themselves in political dialogue and debate in their own section of North Carolina. The recent “tea party” movement has produced opportunities for LS members to raise the issues of true political representation and self-determination, and the over-reaching hand of the Washington regime.
We must not let this pass and we must be a part of the solution.
We can either sit idly in our homes while that Washington regime turns the country into a socialist peoples’ republic, or we as LS members be involved in local debate and help influence political thought toward self-determination. While the LS asserts that no realistic national political reform is possible, we must still help shape political events in our own sovereign States.
Our conference will be highlighted by two-segments of panel-facilitated interactive discussion with LS REBELLION! Blogger Mike Tuggle, New Hanover County Libertarian Party Chair John Evans. This discussion will allow our members to relate what opportunities exist in their towns, and what methods have produced results or failure. We are all seeking best-practices for carefully and creatively inserting convincing traditional conservative arguments into local debates, remembering that all politics is local. We will also discuss what does not work, and what to avoid.
From stressing the importance of State sovereignty and the intent of the Tenth Amendment, to watering the seeds of self-determination for North Carolinians in the face of a despotic nationalist regime, we must first be active locally and seize the opportunities to build consensus for liberty.
Please join us for an inspiring and interactive day of dialogue, learning and re-energizing ourselves.
Directions:
Take Exit 141 off I-40/85 and turn West away from town (left if you are coming from Raleigh, right if you are coming from Greensboro). The Mayflower is located on the left just beyond the interstate overpass and beside the Kangaroo gas station.

*Kindness of Steve and AMEN!
"I say we cannot know your suffering, but this we do know; We love and honour you, veterans, and are justly proud of the heritage you have given us. Just so long as warm blood flows in the veins of man, so long will the words 'Confederate Veteran' cause that blood to tingle with glorious pride, and, if there be one among us, born in our glorious Southland who is not so thrilled, every drop of stagnant blood proclaims him bastard to the South-a coward to all the world."

THE HIGH COST OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
================
Mike Scruggs
According to the Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR), there are 13 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and the fiscal burden on federal, state, and local taxpayers is $113 billion per year. This figure is generally agreed upon by other non-partisan national research organizations such as the Center for Immigration Studies, NumbersUSA, and the Heritage Foundation. In fact, the number may be cautiously conservative and does not include other more substantial economic costs to American workers and families.
Only about half of the 8.4 million illegal workers in the U.S. pay any taxes. At least 80 percent of these use fraudulent or stolen social security numbers. The other half are in the underground economy. Those are the people you see at the grocery buying loads of groceries for large wads of cash paid to them by their illegal immigration enabling employers. Federal and state governments collect less than 30 percent of the taxes that would apply to legal workers. The total federal and state recovery is estimated to be about $13 billion dollars, leaving the nation’s net fiscal costs for illegal immigration at an even $100 billion per year.
Only $29 billion of this annual taxpayer burden falls on the federal government. Seventy-four percent of the burden, $84.2 billion, falls on state and local governments and their taxpayers. Yet the Obama government is deliberately impeding any resistance to illegal immigration by state and local governments, many of which have been thrown into economic crisis by massive illegal immigration.
The total fiscal impact of federal, state, and local taxes is about $1, 117 per native U. S. household per year. Many states are carrying a far heavier burden. California has a $14.4 billion deficit for this fiscal year, yet illegal immigration is costing the state $21.8 billion per year. How soon will it be before American taxpayers are asked to bail out California? Arizona has an $8.5 billion 2011 budget with a potential deficit of $3.1 billion, but illegal immigration is costing state taxpayers $2.6 billion per year. North Carolina has a 2011 budget of $18.9 billion and is facing a budget deficit of approximately $1.0 billion, but illegal immigration is costing North Carolina taxpayers $2.1 billion per year. South Carolina has a $5.0 billion budget and is facing a budget deficit of $455 million but is spending $369 million per year to support illegal immigrant education, medical care, and criminal prosecutions.
The lion’s share of illegal immigration costs is in educating the children of illegal immigrants, where the tab is now running at an estimated $52 billion per year. The vast majority of these costs are being borne by state and local government taxpayers. Actual costs may be higher because of the greater difficulty associated with teaching students who begin school speaking English as a second language. This also diverts attention away from other students and results in declining overall academic performance. This already crushing millstone is growing almost uncontrollably because of illegal immigration and is being further accelerated by U.S. birthright citizenship policy. An estimated 350 thousand children of illegal immigrants enter U.S. public schools every year. As these move through grades K through 12, the burden on our public schools steadily increases. The taxpayer strain is rapidly becoming unbearable. In the face of their own immigration problems, all European countries have abandoned such policies.
Other substantial illegal immigration burdens are in medical care, especially unreimbursed medical expenses, general welfare, and increased law enforcement costs. It is nearly impossible to estimate the cost of illegal alien crime, but a FAIR study indicated the illegal alien criminal incarceration rate was 45 percent higher than the native population.
The “court economists” of the cheap labor lobbies (analogous to the “court prophets” of the Old Testament) tell us that illegal immigrants actually benefit the economy. I hope most intelligent and informed voters can see through this self-serving and absurd claim. Most illegal immigrants are unskilled and 36 percent of them have less than a high school education. Skilled immigrants add to the economy as long as they do not displace American skilled workers, and unskilled immigrants and natives generally receive more government benefits than taxes paid. We already have too many unskilled and poorly educated potential workers.
The fiscal costs of illegal immigration are high, but the economic impact of importing cheap labor to replace American workers is even higher. Even in 2000, Harvard labor economist George Borjas estimated that cheap illegal immigrant labor had driven down American wages by $1,500 per worker per year. Multiply that by 141 million American workers, and you get an annual $211 billion cost to American workers and the economy. Furthermore, the number of illegal immigrants has nearly doubled since then.
According to several academic studies posted on the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) website, for every 100 illegal immigrants hired, approximately 65 American workers are displaced. The cumulative displacement since the 1986 amnesty must then be about 5.7 million workers. How is it that with 15 million unemployed Americans, we still have 8.4 million illegal immigrant workers, and the Obama government will not enforce immigration laws at the employer level?
According to CIS, the ongoing recession has caused the number of illegal immigrants in the country to drop to about 10.8 million. This is proof that cutting off the employment faucet by enforcing our immigration laws would send most of them home at their own expense. But first we must throw the politicians that enable the employment of illegal aliens out of office.
