First mountain lion sighted/killed in Kentucky since before the WBTS

A Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officer killed a mountain lion on a Bourbon County farm on Monday, marking the first confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Kentucky since before the Civil War, said Mark Marraccini, a spokesman for the agency.

Marraccini said a farmer spotted the cat in a tree and alerted the department. When the officer responded, he found the animal had been trapped in different tree by a barking dog and decided it was best to "dispatch it."

Mountain lions were once native to Kentucky.

  2. I saw my first cougar in WI in 1981. As a 13 year old kid, it was down right scary to see such a huge cat in a tree with only a single shot 22 in my hands. Up until the last few years WI DNR has denied even the possibility of the existance of cougars here. Despite photographic evidence ,tracks and poop the DNR said there were no cougars. After a while folks figgured that if cougars dont exist , then there is nothing wrong with shooting them. After that happened the DNR decided they do exist and its illeagle to kill them.

If that ain't typical big government action, I don't know what is. Thanks.

  4. We've had them in Western KY for years in Land Between the Lakes. The guberment has denied they exist (sounds familiar). A wildlife biologist sighted one, but he wasn;t deemed a credible witness!!

    3. :) I was waiting for that. It's amazing how rattlesnake, ad infinitum supposedly tastes like chicken also, not that it does to me.

  5. These critters are occasionally seen in central Illinois but most folks don't have a clue. Latest I've heard of --- My daughter-in-law's uncle nailed one with his game cam about six months ago in St. David area.

Reminds me of the night that I was sittin' out back with a small fire & a few cold ones. For probably ten minutes, I sensed that something/someone was watching me but didn't see or hear anything. Suddenly, there was a loud MEOW by my left leg & I almost jumped into the fire. Damn, I hate stray cats!!!

  6. I suspect they taste just like bald eagle does here in Wisconsin. I think most of the big kitties around here are transient looking for food and maybe their own home range. I dont so much mind that they are around as long as I know they are. Its a little spooky to be walking a mile out of the woods at night with a bow and a flashlight wondering if kitty is wondering what I taste like.

  7. Disgusting! The human savage kills and destroys everything it touches.
I wish whomever killed this magnificent creature rots in Hell, forever.

    2. I don't eat tofu; I eat country ham just like you but believe in killing
only for the benefit of the Republic.

    3. Thanks and the story went that the cop was worried the cat would come down at night and go into a neighborhood and since there wasn't time to get the darts my dusk, he decided that shooting it was safer. I wasn't there, but can't say he made the wrong choice.

  8. And I dont care if you are carrying a full auto 12 ga gattling gun, once a 125# cat is on top of you I think youre screwed. Although I did read a story about a guy who shot a cat while it was gnawing on his head. Unfortunately the 357 bullet went thru kitties head and into his head killing them both. Not certain if this is a true story or not .
