North Carolina university officials and a former governor condemned the toppling of a century-old Confederate memorial on the state’s flagship campus by protesters who said its presence on campus was rooted in racism.

The University of North Carolina system’s president and the chairman of the Board of Governors on Tuesday promised a full criminal investigation of the protest that brought down the statue known as “Silent Sam.” The bronze figure of an anonymous rebel soldier was pulled down from its tall stone pedestal Monday night by protesters using ropes and banners to mask their action.

  1. Condemning is easy.

  5. Condemn? Really. Well, I never!
    Strong letter to follow?
What possessed the angry and uneducated mob of infants to project their violent rage onto a symbol of honor? Why did the law enforcement officers stand by and DO NOTHING? The apparent answer is because those in leadership are sympathetic to the cause, so "nothing to see here".
The event is an easily understood end to a long line of degradation beginning with the erosion of the American family and the removal of education from public schooling.
The climate will not get better until after it gets much worse.

  6. Bullshit. The time to act was Monday. Lip service after the fact does nothing but mollify the critics.

  7. UNC should leave the statue as is. it should be fenced off so as to prevent anyone disturbing it. signage should be erected to show who has done this. as an example of the attitudes and willful destructiveness of the "liberal" (emogi of brownshirt nazi liberal here) activist.

  8. Would it be worthwhile, and educational, to post the picture of "it" in action, hovering over Silent Sam?
