South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley Calls for Removal of Confederate Flag From State Capitol

Via comment by Chickenmom on A Repeat Performance--After the Battle Flag Again

Gov. Nikki Haley today called for state lawmakers to remove the Confederate flag from the Civil War Memorial on the Statehouse grounds.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state Capitol Monday, less than a week after a 21-year-old white man gunned down nine people at a historic African American church.

Support for the flag to come down from leaders around the state and around the country has been steadily growing in the wake of the devastating attack.

"Today, we are here in a moment of unity in our state, without ill will, to say it is time to move the flag from the Capitol grounds," Haley said during a news conference attended by Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, along with other state leaders.

  1. Agree with the SC SCV Cmdr "Do not associate the cowardly actions of a racist to our Confederate Banner," South Carolina Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Leland Summers said in a statement. "There is absolutely no link between The Charleston Massacre and The Confederate Memorial Banner. Don't try to create one."

  2. It comes as no surprise. A politician has to be in front of the camera being seen as doing some thing, saying some thing or taking some kind of action, regardless of how silly or useless it is. Once again, there will be some kind of stupid bill that will be proposed as to "prevent another senseless tragedy from happening again". It seems the need to do some thing over rides any common sense on the matter. Evil people are going to do evil things, with or without a multicolored cloth. Gov. Haley you are an idiot.

& crossed off my list of fairly decent politicians, but that's not saying much these days. :)

    2. I like Gov. Haley although I'm reconsidering my feelings. She does a good job for our southern sister state but she has no real connection to the south, South Carolina or the Confederacy. She doesn't understand or care about our heritage. I'm sure there are those who would call me racist. Hmmm. I guess that's why I'm trying to help the niece of the black lady that takes care of my mom get a college scholarship.

I think Haley will get beat and I suspect Lindsey Graham will go down with her. He made the statement on national TV the other day "if I'm on the ballet in SC I'll win" I don't know about everyone but just that statement would make me vote against him if I lived in SC.

  3. She stood up to the unions but crumbled before the haters. She's just another politician. Sad.

    1. She wants her bread buttered on both sides, but hopefully this will be her downfall.

  4. They just don't get it.

To those of us born and raised in the South that flag is a symbol of the individualist spirit. What we wanted the American flag to be but then found out that it wasn't when it turned on us.

They don't understand it is THEM that create the Roof's of the world in many ways. They are constantly taking away our history and forcing us into the collective. That is not who we are or who we want to be. Is that so difficult to understand? Evidently so, they keep doing it.

When is it going to be time for US to stop having to give up everything that is dear to us and let someone else do the giving for a while? WE are the ones to always have to compromise, to give, to lose.

    I'm damn tired of it.

Based on past experience they know they can take things from us and we won't respond but at some point that line is going to be crossed and there will be no going back. We will stand up and say NO, NO MORE.

I hope that time is now and this is that line.

They take down the flag, we take down things they like, like certain statues. Shouldn't it work both ways?
