Foreign workers taking high tech jobs

Via LH

It's nearly 8 p.m., and inside a state office building two dozen computer experts design and troubleshoot a system that will take and process millions of unemployment claims each year.

It's a $200 million Employment Development Department project, but with the exception of two managers, everyone inside the office is from outside of the U.S. They are employed by Deloitte, a major U.S. IT company hired by the state to create and manage its Unemployment Insurance Modernization project. The mostly Indian nationals are allowed to work here under a visa program called H-1B.

  2. For at least a couple decades now American university major programs in the hard sciences have been dominated by foreign students. Americans do not want to know how to do this stuff. Unfortunately this situation is not reversible in the short term. Tomorrows leaders and innovators will not be American, they are not equipped for the job.

    2. I vehemently disagree with the position that US students don't want to do this and do it right. My brother spent his life in this field and never had trouble getting a job but always laughed at many who complained about the instructors in this field. Most were Asian and had such poor English skills that students could hardly understand them. Those in business were largely non Asian, better paid, and had good English skills. The big change has been in the dramatic increase in H1B vistas as the tech companies want CHEAP and pliant labor. Charge high prices for H1B vistas and they will go away. Or make foreign labor in the US non tax deductible.

    3. H1B vistas

Or get rid of them. We'll survive.
